Gandhi? Yes. Mahatma? No! His God was charka not Kṛṣṇa.

Yes; there was a Gandhi, but he was no mahatma. Srila Prabhupada explains—

Guest: What about the argument, not [indistinct], but India we see that every great saint personality has surrendered to Kṛṣṇa, even Mahatma Gandhi?

Prabhupāda: No, no, no, no.

Guest: He was also taking his…

Prabhupāda: No, no. Don’t say like that. Surrender of Kṛṣṇa is different. Then you have to understand what is surrender. Mahatma never surrendered to Kṛṣṇa. He surrendered to yourself; therefore you killed him. [Indian laughs] He surrendered to his countrymen, and his countrymen killed him. He was working for his countrymen. That’s all. He never worked for Kṛṣṇa.

Guest: But the Gītā was always with him.

Prabhupāda: But, but, no “but.” You see from the action.

Guest: I also read Gītā. What’s the difference? I mean, Mahatma Gandhi…

Prabhupāda: He never surrendered to Kṛṣṇa. I wrote him letter, “Mahatma Gandhi, you have got so much influence. You just preach the gospel of Kṛṣṇa…, Bhagavad-gītā. Now we have attained svarāj. You don’t be in politics.” But he was still in politics after attainment of svarāj. And his assistants became disgusted because he was interfering, and therefore he was killed.… Read More...

Some thoughts on cults.

Dear readers,

Please welcome Sriman Bimalananda Dasa to our Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math Blog.

He was only recently initiated but is very enthusiastic to serve Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Gandhavika Giridhari. I very much enjoyed his first article, presented below, both for its style and content, and expect you will also be satisfied with  it.

I pray you will all offer your blessings upon him to proceed nicely in his search for Sri Krishna, offering him your encouragement, association and affection.

In service to the Lord’s devotees,

Swami B.K. Giri

What follows is a rant on my reaction to those many individuals who call us a “cult” in the derogative sense.

So, a little something I would like to vent.

It appears that many people (westerners in particular) accuse Gaudiya Vaishnavas of belonging to a “cult”. This is simply not true in the pejorative sense of the term. If they took the time to research, (which they don’t care to do) they would find that Vaishnavism is an ancient religion which, if calculated from the time Krishna spoke the Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, is five to six thousand years old, though eternal by all other bonafide accounts.

Simply Surrender

From the journal of: Srimati Jadurani devi dasi

“We have to approach the domain of knowledge with self-surrender, honest inquiry, and a serving attitude. We have to approach that plane with the mentality of slavery. Higher knowledge will not serve a person of lower status. If we want perfect knowledge at all, we will have to serve the Supreme Lord. He will use us for His own purpose; not that we will use Him. We may be subjects in this mundane world, but we will have to become objects to be handled by the superknowledge of that plane. If we want to connect with that higher knowledge, we must approach with this attitude.”~ The Search for Sri Krsna, p. 28-9

It hasn’t even been a week and I am already having conflicting thoughts over my role as a devotee. The pursuit for the truth has always been my deepest aspiration and yet when the door is opened before me, light pouring in from a place I have yet to venture, promising to filter fresh revelations on my deepest questions, I pause hesitatingly.

I have a real desire to serve and honest inquiry comes natural to me…but…surrender. I thought I could…I think I can…And yet..and… Read More...
